TelecomFinance Awards Dinner - the Winners
Renaissance Chancery Court Hotel, Tuesday 26th January 2010

The TelecomFinance awards, honouring the top deals and banks of 2009, were presented by comedian Alun Cochrane at a gala dinner on 26th January. For the deals of the year categories, the TelecomFinance editorial team selected a shortlist of the top transactions in three regions - Europe, the Middle East & Africa and Asia. An independent panel of experts then voted to determine the winners.
The award winners for 2009 are:
Europe Deal of the Year
WINNER: Weather Investment restructuring of Wind Hellas
Value: US$2.958bn
Advisers: Calyon (Weather), Morgan Stanley (Wind)
Closed: December 2009
The judging panel said: "Not only was this one of Europe's biggest ever bond restructuring deals but it was, in the end, a very smartly engineered buyout that gives the company the opportunity to turn its fortunes around."
Middle East & Africa Deal of the Year
WINNER: Vodafone takeover of a 15% stake in Vodacom and Telkom listing of 35% in Vodacom
Value: M&A: US$2.5bn; Listing: US$3.6bn
Advisers: JPMorgan, IDG (Telkom), Morgan Stanley, FirstRand (Government), UBS (Vodafone)
Arrangers: JPMorgan, UBS
Closed: May 2009
The judging panel said: "It's not only the deal value and the complexity of the negotiations, but also the impact on the African industry. It re-enforces considerably Vodafone's presence in Africa and puts the group more explicitly in the runner-up position to consolidate the continent"
Asia Deal of the Year
WINNER: Royal Group acquisition of a 58.4% stake in CamGSM from Millicom and financing loan
Value: M&A: US$346m; Loan: US$421m
Advisers: Cambodia Capital (Royal Group), Goldman Sachs (Millicom)
Arrangers: Standard Bank, ANZ
Closed: November 2009
The judging panel said: "This was truly a trailblazing deal. It was the largest M&A deal in the country, and the financing that accompanied it also saw the largest ever syndicated loan on Cambodian soil. The deal could potentially mark the beginning of a new dawn in Indochina"
